Footballers live in concurrent training whether anyone wrote it into the program or not. The club runs small-sided games, tactical blocks, and extra finishing. You run strength, power, and a few high-speed exposures. Hickson’s 1980 paper made “interference” famous — endurance work blunting strength gains — and a generation of S&C coaches treated the gym and the pitch as enemies. What is concurrent training in football? Concurrent training is programming strength and endurance (or high-intensity running) in the same week or the same day. The independent S&C coach is in a stranger position than a club fitness lead. You do not set the pitch session. You only set the gym. Sequencing is what you actually control: if you put a heavy lower-body day after an 80-minute SSG block, you did not “do concurrent training.” You did residual fatigue with a barbell in the hands.

What the Research Actually Says
Hickson (1980) had trained men doing brutal volumes of both lifting and endurance. Strength stalled. That finding is real. It is also not a football week. Wilson and colleagues’ 2012 meta-analysis is the paper you actually want: interference scales with endurance volume and frequency, running is worse than cycling, and it hits power harder than maximal strength. Footballers are not living on the road. They are living in 4–6 mixed sessions plus a match.
Kang and colleagues (2022, IJERPH) looked specifically at concurrent strength plus HIIT-based endurance in trained team-sport players — seven studies, not a giant literature. If you do not know what the club ran, you cannot sequence. That is the argument in programming around club training: duration × RPE on the same week picture as the gym. Concurrent training theory without that log is guesswork.

Sequencing Rules That Survive Contact With a Club Week
These are the rules I use. They are more conservative than a lab protocol because the club will not wait for your 24-hour window.
Same day, you have them before the pitch
- Strength or power first. Neural qualities die first. Do not squat after 70 minutes of pressing.
- Full rest in the gym. If you have 40 minutes, cut exercises, not rest.
- No extra conditioning after a lower-body strength session if they have club training later that day. They will get it on the pitch.
- Feed them. A meal between bouts is part of the 6-hour idea even when you only have 3.
Same day, you have them after the pitch
This is the independent-coach default, and it is the worst slot. Treat it as damage limitation.
- Drop to 2–3 compounds, 2–4 sets, leave 1–3 reps in reserve.
- Cut long-range eccentrics (full Nordics, heavy RDLs) if the pitch session was deceleration-heavy.
- Keep upper body and isometric options if they still need “a session” for buy-in.
- Skip if RPE was 8+ and duration 70+. You are not “getting it in.” You are collecting residual fatigue.
Different days (the actual solution)
Park heavy lower body on the day furthest from both the match and the club’s hardest pitch session. For most Saturday-match players that is MD-3, which is why it sits at the centre of the MD-minus framework.
Never pair:
- Heavy eccentric lower body + SSG / match-simulation the same day
- Max velocity sprinting + long HIIT the same day
- Your RSA protocol + the club’s RSA protocol in the same 48 hours
Aerobic low-intensity work (tempo, easy bike, extensive intervals well below the high-speed threshold) interferes far less than HIIT. If you need a topping of aerobic work, put it away from the heavy day, not on it.

A Practical Concurrent Week (Saturday Match)
Assume a 21-year-old full-back. Club trains Tue / Thu / Fri. You get him Monday evening and, if needed, a 25-minute top-up Wednesday morning before work.
Monday (MD+2), you first: reload, not a test. Goblet squat 3×8, single-leg RDL 3×6, upper push/pull 3×8, Copenhagen 2×6. RPE 5–6. He has not played a match-level pitch session today. This slot is usable.
Tuesday, club: MD-4 high-intensity. You send nothing.
Wednesday (MD-3), you: the strength day. Trap-bar 4×4, split squat 3×5, chin-up 3×5, Nordics 2×5. Tuesday was SSG; this is about 24 hours later — not Nordics on the SSG night — and 72 hours before the match.
Thursday, club: MD-2 tactical + some high-speed. You do not add flying sprints.
Friday, club: MD-1. You do nothing.
Saturday: match. If he plays 90, Monday becomes recovery-only and Wednesday stays but loses a set.
Two-match week: cancel Wednesday. Concurrent training’s first duty is to stop you inventing a third high-intensity day. In-season programming is mostly subtraction.

Pre-Season Is Where Concurrent Training Goes Wrong
